Abstract
The distribution of organic matter (OM): organic carbon (Corg), hydrocarbons (HC), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), as well as phytopigments and microorganisms was revealed in various types of soils and bottom sediments (BS) of the Tatar Strait coast in winter. The content of Corg in the under-ice water and BS differed from those of the summer period. In silty sediments, the maximum Corg content reached 15.4%, which is two times higher than in summer. The HC concentrations varied in the range of 0.01–1.43 mg/g in BS and exceeded the established background level (≈0.1 mg/g) in silty sediments; the share of HC in the total Corg content was up to 18.1%. In soils, the Corg content varied from 7.3% in post-technogenic soils to 45% in peat soils. In the absence of obvious anthropogenic impact in the peat soils, the HC content was 590–2780 mg/kg. Fermentation products (acetone, acetaldehyde, and methanol) dominated in the VOCs composition in water, BS, and soils. The under-ice period is characterized by the homogenization of VOC concentrations between BS and the aquatic environment due to the absence of evaporation processes and tidal transport. The attenuation of production processes in BS and soils in winter led to increasing in the proportion of carotenoids in phytopigments. The composition of n-alkanes in BS and soils is characterized by the low content of hydrobiont markers at an increase (up to 100%) of high-molecular homologues, which contain, respectively, from 9.1 to 44.1% and from 3.1 to 13.5% markers of terrigenous organic matter.
