Benthic foraminiferal assemblages of the South China Sea

Abstract

Based on the dominant species of benthic foraminifers in the bottom sediments sampled at 270 stations in the South China Sea, their 12 assemblages are defined and mapped. The distribution of these assemblages is controlled by environmental factors that are determined by bathymetric and latitudinal zonality, currents, upwellings, continental runoff, and water productivity. The communities established are indicative of different biotopes characterized by upwellings, higher or lower productivity, and intense or less intense impact of freshwater runoff.
