Thirty years of geological investigations with the use of space facilities: Trends, achievements, and prospects

Abstract

The main achievements and development trends of geological investigations with the use of space facilities during the last 30 years are analyzed, including the study of the structure of the near-surface Earth crustal layer and deep lithosphere, quest for mineral deposits, and prediction of natural hazards and effects of recent geological processes. It is shown that some methods and techniques transformed into routine geological operations with the progress in facilities of space data acquisition and processing, while new opportunities and techniques were successful. The results of space-geological investigations that have promoted solution of important geological tasks are presented.
