Abstract

It is shown that redistribution of the electric field strength between the bulk and electric double layer and within the electric double layer in a plane-oriented liquid crystal results in a local change of the molecular orientation at an applied voltage below the threshold level. This effect was used to obtain optical modulators by prolonged exposure of the liquid crystal samples to a constant electric field.
