Abstract

A theoretical and experimental investigation is made to determine how cesium in the volume and at the surfaces of an ion source influences its emission characteristics. It is shown that under the real conditions of an ion source, cesium in the volume makes an appreciable influence to the kinetic processes but barely affects the H ion current extracted from the source. However, cesium at the surface of the source increases the H ion current severalfold even when the H-H conversion efficiency is low (γ≈10−3). The theoretical conclusions show good agreement with the experimental data obtained in the present study.
