Abstract
The quantized electronic states of a particle whose motion is bounded in one direction by an uneven, impenetrable wall are investigated theoretically. It is shown that under certain conditions the presence of either a periodically uneven surface or a rough surface can give rise to surface states (caused by the unevenness) whose wave functions decay exponentially with distance from the wall.
