Upper Eocene Bivalves from Dnepr, Ukraine: Crassatellidae

In the second part of the monograph, bivalves of the family Crassatellidae from the Upper Eocene Mandrikovka Beds of Dnepr (former city of Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine) and its environs are described. The family Crassatellidae is represented by 25 species, 21 of which were established by the author. These species belong to the genera Crassatella (Crassatella) (seven species), Crassatella (Furvusa subgen. nov.) (one species), Crassatella (Bathytormus) (five species), Crassatina (Crassatina) (four species), Crassovella gen. nov. (four species), and Chattonia (three species). All of these taxa are described and provided with figures of type species. Species are figured in 15 plates. These taxa are mostly established on the shell material from the Upper Eocene beds exposed by the Rybalsky quarry in the city of Dnepr. Valves belonging to the new genus Crassovella and new subgenus Crassatella (Furvusa) come from the same beds. Three out of 25 species are described from a core of the same age, which was obtained during drilling in the vicinity of Dnepr (near the towns of Sinel’nikovo and Kamensky and the village of Vasil’kovka).

I am sincerely grateful to T.S. Ryabokon’ (Geological Institute, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Kiev), who placed at my disposal not numerous, but extremely interesting material collected by geologists in the core of boreholes drilled in the Sinel’nikovskaya (vicinity of the town of Sinel’nikovo) and Volchanskaya (vicinity of the village of Vasil’kovka) depressions during geological survey.

I am thankful to V.V. Dem’yanov, who collected many long years Mandrikovka mollusks in the Dnepr Region. The study of his collections from sands of the Rybalsky quarry undoubtedly made a great contribution to the present monograph.

It was very important for me to get photographs of the holotypes and syntypes of some Crassatina species established by Sokolov (1894), which were transferred to me Aleksandr Guzhov (Laboratory of Mollusks, Borissiak Paleontological Institute, Moscow). The high quality of these photographs allowed a number of very difficult questions connected with the systematics of Mandrikovka Crassatina to be resolved.

I am sincerely grateful to Jean-Michel Pacaud for an opportunity to examine valves of Crassovella woodi (Koenen) from the Latdorfian of Germany, which are stored in the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, Collection de Paléontologie (Paris, France).

It is noteworthy that photographs of valves of Crassovella woodi (Koenen) from the paleontological collection of the National Museum of Natural History of Paris included in the present study were produced by the photographer Peter Massicard (grant of the French State managed by the Agence Nationale de la Recherche via the programme “Investissements d’avenir” (ANR-11-INBS-0004-RECOLNAT)).
