A modified compact tension specimen for the study of residual stress maintainability

Conclusion

Residual stresses are intentionally induced into engineering components for the purpose of lowering operational mean stresses, thus, enhancing the fatigue life of such components. One of the concerns pertaining to residual stress is it’s maintainability. Previous studies have indicated that for some type of materials and loading, residual stress relaxation might occur with repeated cyclic loading. In this study, a modified compact tension specimen was designed and used for residual stress relaxation investigation. Different specimens were initially subjected to an overload and subsequently fatigue tested under constant load. All specimens exhibited a certain level of stress relaxation.
