Abstract
The objective of this article is to illustrate the potential for mental calculation to promote students’ mathematical activity. This study analyzes the strategies generated by students to resolve mathematical tasks related to the concept of averages without using pencil and paper. Unlike in typical studies, the potential of mental calculation is not examined in terms of its long-term efects on students’ mathematical practices; rather, the focus is on its impact on mathematical activity as it is carried out, in the here and now. The analysis conducted proposes two types of potential: frst, the potential for mental calculation to generate mathematical strategies for problem-solving, and second, the potential for these same strategies to open toward other mathematical notions and create extensions.
