This study is part of a broad research programme being developed: ‘Dividing for Adding: The Production of Political Subjects Among Women Leaders (The Case of Union Women Leaders in the Banking Sector and Domestic Service in Salvador-Bahia)’. This research project is receiving financial aid from the Brazilian Government–CNPq. Thanks are due to those domestic workers' union leaders interviewed. Special thanks to Creuza Maria Olivera, the president of the Union. I am also in debt to the Anthropologist Michel Agier and the Sociologist Luiza Bairros (also from the MNU) for their critical reading of the first draft of this work. Comments from the referees of this journal as well as editing by David Lehmann contributed to the improvement of the article.
