Abstract
Flag smut (Urocystis agropyr) was detected in a few crops of the wheat cultivar Rosella in southern New South Wales during 1986. Screening of cultivars, potential parents and breeding lines was undertaken from 1987 to assist in breeding cultivars resistant to flag smut. Most cultivars recommended in New South Wales have resistance but the cultivar Rosella is very susceptible and could enable flag smut to spread and cause severe losses if other control measures were not taken. Most breeding lines from the Central and Southern New South Wales wheat breeding program and introductions from CIMMYT were resistant, but a number of introductions from the USA and Europe were either susceptible or very susceptible to flag smut
