An unusual Rhizoctonia-like fungus associated with red clover and cotula in New Zealand

Abstract

A slow-growing, sterile fungus, resembling Rhizoctonia, was associated with diseased red clover and Leptinella dioica (cotula) in New Zealand. It differed from other Rhizoctonia spp. examined by possessing some ascomycetous characteristics; namely, the absence of dolipore septa and insensitivity to the basidiomycete-specific fungicide, benodanil. However, the presence of multilayered septal walls and the absence of Woronin bodies are not typical of ascomycetes and thus the affinities of this fungus are unclear.
