Globalization and Sustainable Development: At the Urban Crossroad

The intellectual, political and institutional revolution marked by the endorsement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) means that there is now multilateral acknowledgment that we share a common future, and that this future is already (and will become even more overtly) defined by urbanization. Concerted effort and strategic prioritization is now imperative to realize the 2030 ambition of living collectively on the urban planet, unblocking the global status quo to ensure that, regardless of where on Earth a person is born or resides, they can have access to the same human rights and minimal standards of social and economic development. Also locked into the paradigm shift of the 2030 Agenda is an acknowledgement that, no matter how wealthy a person or society may be, the ecological costs of their lifestyles should not compromise those of future generations or the planet’s own integrity.
