John Deni’s book on NATO and Article 5 is a timely addition to the NATO literature and to reflections on challenges for the transatlantic Alliance in today’s complex security environment. As the Alliance is again faced with what can be described as an Article 5 challenge, Deni’s book provides the reader with an outstanding examination of the issues and challenges that nations must come to terms with. Framed around a structure of ends, ways, and means, Deni begins by providing a synopsis of how the Alliance moved from collective defence and article 5 during the Cold War to collective security and crisis management after the end of the Cold War, and now returning to collective defence requirements.
