Abstract
The 2017 French presidential election is regarded as a watershed in French politics, with Emmanuel Macron winning the election as the leader of a newly founded political movement. This paper probes the idea that the French political ideological space has lost its bipolar structure and that the election forms a continuation of a decreasing political polarization blurring the left–right divide, a trend posited to have occurred since the 2000s. It uses an inductive scaling approach drawing on information about candidate policy stances from the Voting Advice Application Boussole Présidentielle to extract candidates’ positions and to explore which issue domains structure their inter-relations. The resulting candidate policy space does not suggest a dissolution of ideological differences between left and right. Yet, while Macron and Le Pen do not transcend a polarized left–right divide, they do mark deviations from a clear-cut bipolar left–right block structure and increase political complexity.

The text snippets on which the coding decisions are based are provided directly in the Boussole Présidentielle.
As the residual category 5 (“without opinion”) occurs only rarely and substantially comes close to the meaning of a neutral position, this category has been coded as 2 (“neutral”) in order to avoid missing values.
The data and the script file can be obtained from the authors.
There is also a notable item that captures the candidates’ law and order stance but that deviates from the horizontal axis. Limiting individual liberties to better fight terrorism is oriented toward the top right of Fig. 1. This is probably because this stance has become more established among candidates and parties after a series of terrorist attacks.
This is also supported by the supplementary estimation of confidence intervals based on the bootstrapping technique. Resampling and scaling the original data (alpha = 0.05) yields confidence intervals and corresponding ellipsoids that do not overlap, except for Le Pen and Dupont-Aignan (see “Appendix II”).
