Drawing borders of mental disorders: An interview with David Kupfer

Abstract

The new Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) is on its way and will most likely be published in 2013. The chair of the task force of this significant project, Dr David Kupfer, was in the Netherlands at a national psychiatry conference to give an update on its progress. Shortly before his main lecture I had the opportunity to talk to him. We discussed the current striking rise of particularly children with a psychiatric diagnosis and how DSM-5 will deal with this development. This issue led to a discussion on how the fundamental distinction between normal psychological functioning and psychopathology will be made in DSM-5.
