The recent launch of the Sustainable Development Goals – and particularly Goal 6, which emphasizes the commitment to achieve universal water supply and sanitation access by 2030 – illustrates that the provision of water supply and sanitation remains a focal point for international development. An estimated 670 million people lack access to safe drinking water, and almost 2.4 billion people have inadequate access to sanitation. Most likely these figures underestimate the actual access to water services. By analysing the development of water services in Finland, the author aims to create a better understanding of key strategic decisions and their impact on the development of the water services sector, and distill lessons that can foster peer learning.
