As I write this (in early 2010) the California Master Plan for Higher Education has been declared dead. My university, part of the California State University (CSU) system, faces more funding depredations, cuts piled on top of years of previous cuts from which it has never recovered. We’re cutting enrollment. We’re cutting both the number and variety of classes. We’re cutting faculty – at this point mostly through attrition and the ‘non-rehiring’ of contingent instructors, but our remaining longer-serving lecturers may be next to go, and some tenure-line faculty in vulnerable departments and programs may also face layoff, and indeed, layoff without much viable hope of recall. Those of us who are left will see larger classes (‘more efficient,’ administrators explain), more exacting service obligations, and less release time for unsponsored research. Thus I approach this...
