Introduction: Toward the congruence of contemporary political communication campaigns?

Since the beginning of the current century, democracy appears to be utterly transformed by the evolution of political communication. Among them, the increasing personalization of political communication is inducing significant changes in electoral campaigns, and, furthermore, this seems to be affecting, if not questioning, governments and political regimes all around the world (Holz-Bacha et al, 2007; Strömbäck, 2009).

At the heart of this development, changes in American political campaigns appear to have been influential all around (Hallin and Mancini, 2004; Esser and Pfetsch 2004; Vedel and Cann, 2008; Wayne, 2008; Johnson, 2009 [2008]; Maarek, 2010; Nelson, 2010). The term ‘Americanization’ was even pronounced, not only to express the adaptation of American electoral campaign strategies and tactics in other countries, and the personalization phenomenon, but also to address the general evolution of political communication (Plasser and Plasser, 2002).
