Summary:
Mechanical wounding of trees into the xylem induces the formation of callus tissue along the wound edges. The present paper deals with light and electron microscopic studies of the development of a wound callus in European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and European oak (Quercus robur L.). Initial reactions became visible in both species as earlier as ten days after wounding as cell divisions of cambial and ray cells close to the wound. Ongoing cell divisions lead to the formation of the young callus consisting of isodiametric parenchymatous cells. These cells primarily contain large vacuoles often filled with dark staining substances. After a response period of six months the young callus is distinctly enlarged and forms a distinct callus protruding between the bark and xylem over the outer parts of the wound. The callus at this stage is already subdivided into typical tissues termed wound xylem, wound cambium, wound phloem and wound periderm. Structural development is discussed.
