Abstract
Replacing a damaged human organ with an artificial but living part sounds like fantasy. Yet, like many fantastic ideas, it is coming closer to reality thanks to biotechnology. No single dramatic breakthrough has occurred; instead, biological replacement parts and bio-artificial organs are the products of steady advances in biotechnological knowledge and competence.
