Abstract
Intrinsic oxygen fugacity measurements on minerals from mafic rocks that cool at pressures greater than one atmosphere indicate that the Earth's interior is in a more reduced state than are the erupting tholeiitic magmas. This review suggests that specific oxidation–reduction equilibria within magmas and between magma and vapour can account for the characteristic oxygen fugacities of most lavas. A model is presented to illustrate how an initially highly reduced mafic magma may oxidize by degassing of C-species in the conditions of the shallow crust.
