Abstract

Information available on mechanisms of corrosion of steel in concrete is reviewed and the need emphasized for a better understanding of the electrochemistry of the subject and aspects of the physical performance of the concerete cover in relation to the diffusion of both chloride and oxygen. The practical influence of data obtained from studies in such areas in relation to longer-term improvements in durability of reinforced concrete is considered.
