Abstract

Mantle fragments carried up from as deep as 200km by high-velocity eruptions show metasomatic introduction of volatile bearing minerals, before melting. The broad spatial and temporal distribution of alkaline magmatism shows that transfer of lithophile elements to the outer Earth by rising volatiles, is a long-term and continuing process in planetary evolution.
