Abstract

Three intermediate- to large-scale bed configurations are recognised (from intertidal sand bodies in the Bay of Fundy), each with a discrete hydraulic stability field. Type 1 megaripples (‘bars’) form at lower flow velocities than Type 2 megaripples (‘dunes’), whereas Type 2 megaripples and megarippled sandwaves are separated primarily by grain size. Megarippled sandwaves occur only in sands coarser than 0.308 mm.
