Abstract
Chlorine and bromine variations in basalts erupted along the Reykjanes Ridge axis and Iceland follow a predicted first-order model, reflecting volatile degassing at water depths shallower than about 500 m, superimposed with changes due to the presence of two chemically distinct mantle sources and their mixing. Iceland mantle ‘plume’ contains three to four times more pristine Cl and Br than the asthenosphere depleted in large ionic lithophile elements.
