Natural selection for energetic efficiency and the relationship between activity level and mortality

Abstract

A RELATIONSHIP between mortality and metabolic rate may be the basis of a powerful mechanism for the evolution of efficiency in animal locomotion. The ideas presented here were suggested by telemetric observations of brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) in their natural environment1 but may be applicable to a very wide range of animals.
