Abstract
AMONG investigations of filtration mechanism and food selectivity of filter feeders1–7, Gophen et al.6 have used double labelling to show the preferential absorption of bacteria by Ceriodaphnia reticulata (Jurine) in long term experiments. Lampert7, using the same technique but with a 15-min exposure, reported a coefficient of selection greater than 1 for bacteria ingested by small daphnids in the presence of mixed food. I present here the results of a study of the feeding mechanism of Daphnia magna (Strauss) during short exposure to bacteria, algae or a mixture of the two.
