Abstract

SERUM haptoglobin is decreased in haemolytic anaemias and severe hepatic dysfunction such as cirrhosis, and increased in many pathological states, especially inflammatory and malignant neoplastic disorders1. Serum haptoglobin can be increased markedly in experimental animals by various inflammatory agents such as turpentine, carrageenan or proteolytic enzymes2. Others, such as histamine and 5-hydroxytryptamine, produce a very slight increase3. I have now found that various prostaglandins (PGE1, PGE2, PGF and PGA2) can increase serum haptoglobin as much as do turpentine and carrageenan.
