Abstract

FEW studies of materials containing both phosphate and silicate tetrahedra have been reported. This may seem surprising as large numbers of natural or synthetic aluminosilicates and aluminophosphates are known1,2. But the substitution in minerals of P(V) for Si(IV) in silicate structures, or of Si(IV) for P(V) in phosphate structures is not common. Among the minerals described to have any significant degree of P(V)–Si(IV) partial substitution are viseite3, nagatelite4 and wilkeite5, an apatite with partial SiO4 + SO4 substitution for PO4. Some synthetic phosphosilicates, chiefly apatites, are described in refs 6 and 7. A very few phosphosilicates where Si and P may be crystallographically independent are also known, and the structures of silicocarnotite8 [Ca5(PO4)2SiO4] and lomonosovite9 [Na5Ti2(Si2O7)(PO4)O2] have recently been described. Natural phosphorus is mostly found in association with calcium in apatite minerals1,2.
