Abstract

ASSUMING that morphine induces dependence in response to continued interaction of the drug with an unidentified biochemical process of neurones, then suitable pharmacological manipulation might produce a paradigm of the morphine abstinence syndrome in experimental animals not exposed to any opiate. If so, the way in which such a quasi-abstinence syndrome was produced might throw light on the endogenous biochemical process involved1.
