Abstract
WE have reported the phenomenon of “minimal medium recovery” of heated Salmonella typhimurium LT2 (ref. 1) and how this phenomenon could be explained in terms of DNA damage caused by sequential exposure to heat and nutritionally complex medium2. We now show that treatment of S. typhimurium with rifampin also results in decreased viability on rich relative to minimal medium and that the DNA from these rifampin-treated bacteria exhibits breaks after exposure to a rich or complex medium.
