Abstract

THE cytolysis of alloantigen-bearing target cells by thymus-derived (T) lymphocytes from appropriately immunized animals has particular relevance to allograft rejection (see ref. 1 for review). Although the mechanism of lysis remains imperfectly understood, recent studies suggest that it consists of multiple steps2–4 triggered by antigen-lymphocyte interaction5, which terminate in the secretion of a cytotoxic mediator protein into or onto the membrane of the target cell6,7.
