Abstract

IN the midst of some controversy, cytological and genetical evidence is accumulating to support the view that, in contrast to other fungi, the Oomycetes resemble higher organisms in being diploid in the vegetative state with meiosis occurring prior to gamete formation1. However, there is still little cytological information available for many important fungi in this group. Outstanding among these is the potato blight fungus, Phytophthora infestans.
