Abstract
IN spite of an extensive literature1,2 little is known about the way in which insects defend themselves against bacteria. Antibodies have not been found in animals more primitive than certain species of fish3,4 and organ transplantation is possible in larvae of several species of Lepidoptera5 unopposed by defensive systems such as found in vertebrates.
