Abstract

CONSIDERABLE evidence has accumulated recently indicating that potassium ions are required for stomatal opening in the light1–3. The observation that potassium ion accumulation occurs against a concentration gradient implicates an ion “pump”; ATP derived from photophosphorylation has been suggested as the energy supply. For some years, the metabolic and hormonal regulation of stomatal apertures has been known and used to understand mechanisms of stomatal behaviour4. However, the effect of these hormones and metabolic inhibitors on the potassium balance of guard cells is not known. In some species stomatal opening also occurs in the dark. Much less is known about dark opening than light opening and accumulation of potassium in guard cells during opening in darkness has not been demonstrated.
