Abstract

CHEMISTS have long been interested in sweet substances to be used in place of sugar for medical and dietary purposes, and several such substances have been found in natural sources or as synthetic compounds. Sodium saccharin, sodium cyclohexylsulphamate, glycyrrhizin1 (V), stevioside2 (VI), naringin dihydrochalcone3 (VII), neohesperidine dihydrochalcone3 (VIII), and L-aspartyl-L-phenylalanine methyl ester4 (IX) are well known as sweeteners, some of which have been put to practical use. We wish to report a new type of sweet compound with a different structure.
