Abstract
OUR suggestion1 that kerogen present in relatively unmetamorphosed Pre-Cambrian sediments was composed of sporopollenin was initiated by our analyses and the observations of others that the organic chemistry of such sediments appears relatively constant. Similar sporopollenin–kerogen can and does occur in younger sediments, including the Green River Formation (5 × 107 yr), and we mentioned this material solely because it provides a valuable source of comparative analytical data.
