Tolerance Induction by an Apparently Non-immunogenic Molecule

Abstract

THE nature of immunological tolerance is of interest in relation to an understanding of the immune process in general, and is of practical importance in connexion with tissue transplantation. Medawar1 postulated that the usual outcome of an encounter between immunologically compctent cells and antigen was tolerance, a fraction of the cells being stimulated to produce antibody: if an antigen did not immunize, it would induce tolerance. This view is supported by the finding that an antigen may simultaneously induce immunity and tolerance2,3.
