Abstract

THE zonation of stony corals on both Atlantic and Pacific coral reefs has been well documented. Descriptions of coral reefs, wherein communities or associations of species are developed into zones or bands in relation to water depth, wave action and distance from shore, have been published for the Caribbean1–6, and for Pacific reefs7–11. Pattern and horizontal spatial distribution of corals within the respective zones have received little attention12, although certain species have been reported as dominant or exclusive within certain zones1,3,4,8.
