Abstract
SINCE the finding in 1961 that free fatty acids inhibit the myocardial oxygenation of glucose1, increasing emphasis has been placed on the role of free fatty acids as myocardial fuel2. It is now known that free fatty acids inhibit glucose metabolism at several sites3. In studies on the human heart in situ free fatty acids are the dominant fuel in the fasting state4. It has therefore been suggested that free fatty acids are of major importance as a source of myocardial energy.
