Abstract
WE report here age determinations by the 230Th/234U method1–3 on corals from a Pleistocene littoral sequence along the Red Sea coast of Egypt. This coast is characterized by interbedded Pleistocene terrestrial gravel and coral reef rock, overlying with unconformity a gently tilted sequence of late Tertiary sediments. The Pleistocene sequence is indented by a number of benches; most are wave-eroded but some may be partly constructional. Each bench is encrusted with contemporary reef material and associated alluvial gravel (refs. 4–11, and unpublished work of R. G.).
