Abstract

WE have already demonstrated that basement membranes and reticular networks of human liver, spleen and aorta exhibit different patterns of macromolecular organization and aggregation1–4. In this report we present data concerning the structural heterogeneity of kidney basement membranes. The data are based on the analysis of forty-six apparently normal human kidneys, obtained by percutaneous biopsy (eighteen samples) and necropsy (twenty-eight samples). Both unfixed and Carnoy's fixed specimens were investigated using histochemical methods (refs. 2, 3, 5).
