Initiation of RNA Synthesis: the Function of σ in the Binding of RNA Polymerase to Promoter Sites

Abstract

In the presence of σ, E. coli RNA polymerase forms rifampicin resistant complexes with DNA in the absence of nucleoside triphosphates. These complexes only form at promoter sites, so the number of σ-recognized promoters per genome for several DNA phages could be determined.
