Pavlov1 concluded that the cortex is essential for conditioning; yet Culler and Mettler2 reported conditioning a decorticate dog, while Shurrager et al.3–5 report having conditioned dogs and cats caudal to spinal cord transections. Franzisket6,7 believes that it is possible to condition the withdrawal reflexes of spinal frogs.
