Abstract

THE rate at which rhodopsin regenerates may be relevant to the mechanism of dark adaptation, but the kinetics of the regenerative process are still poorly understood. Because modern fundus reflectometry1,2 permits the spectrophotometric study of photochemical reactions in human retinae with comparative ease, the difficulty must lie in the nature of the bleaching process preceding regeneration, which is only now beginning to be elucidated. Thus products of photolysis which undergo relatively slow thermal changes3–5 may contribute to, or mask, changes in oabsorbance due to regeneration of the parent pigment.
