Abstract

DURING an investigation of the trophic relationships of the marine benthos, attempts have been made to isolate and identify the organic solutes in sea water. These have been generally defined as constituents which pass a membrane of pore size 0.45µ. A discussion of the most likely solutes and a list of those so far found have been provided by Duursma1, and methods for their isolation have been reviewed by Hood2 and Riley3. Practical comparison of various methods has led us to conclude that the co-precipitation method is potentially the most versatile, is convenient and has the added advantage of requiring only mild operating conditions.
