Abstract

HYDROXYUKEA is a potent inhibitor of DNA synthesis and mitosis1–6. It is known that it interferes with the reduction of ribonucleotides to deoxyribonucleotides1–4. It is bacteriostatic for Escherichia coli7, where it induces a reversible inhibition of DNA synthesis without affecting the synthesis of RNA and proteins. At lethal concentrations, RNA (but not protein) synthesis is inhibited8, and an additional DNA band becomes visible in ultracentrifugation diagrams9; it is possible that DNA becomes incapable of both replication and transcription.
