Abstract
IT is generally recognized that the first discernible stage in the mechanical failure of timber under stress is the appearance of minute dislocations (slip planes) in the structure of the cell wall1–8. Although they have been recorded to a limited extent in tension and shear failures6,7, they are found in abundance in timber compressed parallel to the grain, first appearing when the strain is about half the failing load5.
