Abstract

BADZIOCH1 has summarized the reasons for the considerable importance attached to the development of coalfired magnetoplasmadynamic generator plant. Coal is, however, the most difficult fossil fuel to use in this application partly because of the detrimental effects of its ash and partly because of the difficulties associated with its combustion. Several hypothetical designs of plant have been suggested2 and the theoretical conductances of the products of combustion computed3, but no experimental data on the conductance of coal combustion products in the appropriate temperature range have been reported.
